Robert
Mandeville
A
cheerful, smiling Robert wiped the foam off his lip, shaking his head from side
to side, “Did not have to use a drop of it. They killed themselves. I tell you,
Odell, I felt sorry for those fellows. In fact, I doubt that I could have
poisoned them. They were such likable chaps. They made me feel welcome. I was
having an attack of guilt when the oldest cousin, James, walked in from the
garden holding a double handful of yew berries. He plopped them in the
big tureen of hot porridge and stirred them in.”
Lady Marleigh
and Andrew Crofton, Duke of Pangbourne
Swansea
blustered at the same time, “That minx is a danger to society. She needs to be
locked up. Charges. I should bring charges!”
“NO
MORE. ENOUGH OF THIS TITTLE-TATTLE!” Crofton thundered, his cavernous voice
reverberating throughout the room and beyond.
The
new Duke of Pangbourne motioned for Lady Marleigh to come behind him for
protection. She walked at an angle, never taking her eyes from Swansea. As
Marleigh started to pass, Andrew held up his palm to stop her progress. He
reached for the sword, but an angry
Marleigh, breathing hard, watched Swansea for any movement. She was unwilling
to release her weapon.
